Virginia Tech has close to one thousand registered student organizations with goals ranging from social to special interest. Of these thousand, no single group has all organizational operations mastered. Each student organization can benefit by exchanging ideas with others because each organization shares common challenges ranging from fundraising to membership recruitment. In order to facilitate an exchange of ideas, the second annual Leadership Connection is a one day conference aimed at gathering student leaders to hold discussion based workshops on common issues.
Additionally, a showcase for community organizations in need of volunteer assistance will allow student leaders to network with new philanthropy outlets. Leadership Connection 2006 will take place on Saturday, October 28, and be comprised of three workshop sessions (5 workshops to choose from), a lunch, and a keynote address. Discussion groups will be moderated by prominent student leaders, community leaders, and faculty.
The success of the conference lies in the leaders that attend. Please join us to advance your organizational knowledge as well as share your experiences with others. Leadership Connection 2006 focuses on concrete ideas, open communication, and the diversity of student interests at Virginia Tech.
- Fundraising
Perhaps one of the greatest hurdles for organizations lies in attaining adequate funding. This session will allow leaders to discuss successful as well as ineffective fundraising projects and approaches. - Membership Recruitment/Retention
This session will revolve around gaining and sustaining membership. Many organizations are able to recruit, but not retain membership. Others have strong memberships at times, but fail to recruit new members to uphold their success. - Philanthropy
The Blacksburg community supports Virginia Tech and gives students a home; however, the community also needs the support of the students as well. This session will discuss opportunities to volunteer with local organizations in need. - Diversity
The session will visit diversity issues within organizations. Additionally, the benefits of two or more organizations collaborating for a common goal will be investigated. - Budget Board Process
Learn how to write an effective budget board request to recieve a grant from the university for your special events.
